Key Players: Mitch Vardy Hambrook Sports Club Volunteer Treasurer

As a CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club), there's a lot of hard (unpaid!) work that goes into running Hambrook Sports Club. We thought it would be nice to give you the chance to get to know a few of our "Key Players" – the people who willingly volunteer their time and expertise to give our community a friendly place to play sport and meet friends. For our first post we invite you to meet Mitch Vardy, our Volunteer Treasurer.

How long have you been affiliated with Hambrook Sports Club?

I have been associated with Hambrook for as long as I can remember. My grandfather used to play football on the common and then followed my father running a team on Hambrook too! I've grown up with Hambrook Sports Club and continue to carry the Vardy history of assisting with the running of the club.

Tell us about what you do at/for the club as Volunteer Treasurer?

As the Treasurer of the sports club I use my Chartered Accountancy qualification to assist with the day to day finances of the club, together with producing year end accounts to be presented to the committee. I also help run one of the Sunday football teams at the club, which my brother-in-law and myself set up eight years ago. I am also one of the longer serving members of Hambrook Cricket Club and recently stepped back after captaining the 1st team for 6 seasons.

Why is Hambrook Sports Club important to you?

As mentioned previously, I have been around Hambrook for pretty much my whole life and would hate to see the sports club fold. I'm working hard, together with other members of the committee, to ensure this is not the case. The cricket club in particular has an amazing friendly and inclusive vibe which makes it all the more important to ensure the club facilities and sports club develops. Having met so many amazing people through the sports club, many of which are no longer with us, I am determined to keep the place running!

Tell us an interesting, or funny fact about yourself.

When on holiday in the Caribbean I managed to get a free tour of the Viv Richards Stadium after the taxi driver mistakenly thought I was a relative of Ben Stokes!
